Welcome to Costa Rica!

Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO)  is located in Alajuela, in close proximity to the capital San José.  When you arrive at the airport, a representative from the car rental company will be waiting for you to take you to the Car Rental Office near the Airport, and once there, deliver the car. 

You will receive all the details about how the vehicle works. In addition, you will review the contract together and go over any questions. Once everything is clear, you will be ready to receive the car.

Please note: A credit card is required for the deposit on the hire car. EC cards, checks or cash are not accepted.

Note: The maximum waiting time is 2 hours after the scheduled arrival time.  In the case of slight delays, there may be an additional cost for exceeding the 2-hour waiting time, this extra must be paid directly to the driver. If the flight is diverted or the delay is more than one hour after the scheduled arrival time, the driver may not be able to wait and a new transfer may need to be paid for.

Emerald green mountains and magical waterfalls!

Bajos del Toro is located between the Juan Castro Blanco National Park and the Poas Volcano National Park. It is immersed in the mountains, and it is home to some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country, such us “Tesoro Escondido”, and “Toro Amarillo” (the most famous ones), as well as lush cloud forests and “emerald green” hillsides. If you are looking for an “off the beaten path” destination, Bajos del Toro will be for you.

The scenic setting is ideal for hiking and nature photography.  A hidden tiny village surrounded by undiscovered and magical cloud forests with sky-blue natural pools.   This wonderful treasure is a bird’s paradise, making it one of the best places for birdwatchers. The mountain landscape with abundant vegetation, pristine rivers and impressive waterfalls, is the perfect environment for outdoor lovers.

Important: In case you are traveling with a car rental, please be aware that there is no gas station at the village.  You must refuel before entering the area.

Due to the altitude (between 1400 to 1900 meters) and nearby forests, rain showers could be at any time.  Without that rain it will be impossible to admire the beautiful green landscape and the many waterfalls.  Additionally, the temperatures are around 20°C during the daytime, but during the night, it could get to 10°C. Be sure to pack a rain poncho, pullover, windbreaker and long pants to be comfortable.

Day at leisure!

Whether you want to relax and read a book or explore the enchanting surroundings on one of the many hiking trails, the Bajos del Toro region is perfect for relaxing but also for an active vacation.  Bajos del Toro offers entertainment, landscapes and views to satisfy all tastes.

A visit to the “Del Toro” Waterfalls, the most breathtaking waterfall in Costa Rica, is an experience you will never forget. The waterfall tumbles over colorful cliffs and splashes into a pool of gorgeous blue water surrounded by lush vegetation. A hike around the waterfall for the hardened adventurers will offer a view of the thriving flora and fauna.

The different hikes available will take you through colorful primary and secondary forests from where you can see many exotic flowers, mystic clouds in the mountains, frogs, agoutis, monkeys and the most beautiful bird in the Americas: The Resplendent Quetzal. 

For families, a visit to the “Dino Land Park” will be an adventure for all ages! It is a Theme Park with life-size dinosaur figures where nature meets the Jurassic era. Along the trail, you'll be accompanied by 25 moving and sound dinosaurs. The adventure continues until you reach the majestic waterfalls with turquoise pools.

Bajos del Toro is also a peaceful place to be disconnected from the “fast-rhythm life” and reconnect with Mother Nature” recharging positive energies.

Heading to La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano!

The majestic Arenal Volcano is already waiting for you. You can see its impressive, cone-shaped form from far away, while you are getting closer. However, the giant often hides behind clouds, so you are lucky if you get to see it in its full beauty!
Around the volcano, there are many natural sights to discover: waterfalls, old lava flows, huge trees, and hot springs heated by volcanic veins.

How about a hike at the foot of the volcano, followed by pure relaxation in one of the thermal springs? There are activities for all ages: from peaceful quiet to exciting adventure, there is something for everyone.

Until 2010, the volcano was regularly active, with frequent smoke and glowing rocks. This active phase began with a major eruption in 1968, and continued with smaller eruptions until 2010. Since then, Arenal Volcano has been in a resting phase with very low activity – a normal process for active volcanoes.
The volcano and the town of La Fortuna are popular stops for many tourists, offering plenty of hotels, restaurants, shops, and a wide range of activities.

In Search of Sloths!

Today, you will embark on a unique tour! You will be picked up at your hotel and set off in search of the ever-smiling tree inhabitants. The local guide knows the area inside and out and will take you to the usual sloth hiding spots. The Arenal area is known for its diverse wildlife, including the two species of sloths that live in Costa Rica. In addition to sloths, you may also spot toucans, frogs, hummingbirds, iguanas, and monkeys.

Breakfast or a snack is included and will be arranged according to the tour schedule. After the tour, you will return to the hotel.

Journey to the North Pacific at Playa Tamarindo!

Today your journey takes you to Tamarindo on the North Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Summer temperatures of around 25 to 38 degrees prevail here all year round. The town of Tamarindo has long been known among locals and foreign visitors as a seaside resort and therefore offers a good infrastructure. The wide sandy beach offers shady trees and sections with sometimes strong and sometimes gentle waves, ideal for travelers who look for surfing, swimming and kayaking. You can find easily howler monkeys and iguanas in the trees all over the area.  Tamarindo is known for beautiful sunsets and a vibrant beach to enjoy the sun and sand.  The town has a wide range of hotels, restaurants, bars, shops and leisure activities.

Tamarindo beach is known as a surfing spot from beginners to professionals. However, there are also some quiet ocean areas where you can go for a swim. The town of Tamarindo is already a popular destination well visited, so there are a variety of activities on offer, such as diving tours, surf lessons, kayaking in the mangroves or day trips to the surrounding areas. It also offers morning or sunset sailing tours to do snorkeling, while enjoying the ocean breeze. In addition, there are several beaches in the surroundings that you can explore and spend the day. 

After enjoying the beach life, hang out in the evening, tasting snacks and cocktails in cozy restaurants and bars!

Back to the Pulsating Heart of Costa Rica!

Travel time: approx. 5 hours

Unfortunately, your vacation is slowly coming to an end.

In the evening, you will return your rental car at your hotel in the Central Valley and spend your final night there before your journey leads you home or onwards.  The Central Valley is home to the majority of Costa Rica’s population.  You can take the advantage of the city to buy your last souvenirs before your departure.

Note: If the rental car representative does not arrive at the agreed time at the hotel, you can leave the key and GPS/phone at the hotel reception.

The climate in the Central Valley is especially pleasant and mild, making it an ideal place to relax. From the mountain slopes, you’ll be treated to a unique view of the twinkling lights of the entire valley at night.

Adiós, Costa Rica!

Today, it’s time to say goodbye to the tropical paradise of Costa Rica. A transfer service will pick you up from your hotel based on your flight time and take you to the airport. With wonderful memories of your journey in your luggage, you’ll board your flight home.
